The Greek government told the United States it is increasing its security forces and making preparations to deal with any terrorist threat at the Athens Olympics this August.
A delegation led by Greek Public Order Minister Giorgos Floridis briefed national security advisor Condoleezza Rice at the White House Thursday on precautions for the Games. The group also had appointments with F-B-I Director Robert Mueller and C-I-A Director George Tenet.
After his meeting with Ms. Rice, Mr. Floridis said his delegation laid out a very comprehensive and good plan for the Games, which will be held from August 13th to 29th. Greece plans to spend three times more money on security and devote three times more personnel than Australia did for the 2000 Games in Sydney.
The issue of outside security help is sensitive in Greece, where officials insist they are capable of safeguarding the Olympics. But Greece is also getting support from NATO allies and is working with a seven-nation security advisory group, which includes the United States, Israel and Britain.
